The valve is the heart tap and control the volume of water. There are four types of valves:

Compression valves

Compression valve faucets have been in use the longest and are the cheapest kind. They are identifiable by their hot and cold water separate handles and their action requires you to tighten the handles down to close the water flow.

Compression faucets work by using a compression rod that is a type of screw with a slice of glory at the end of pressing against a valve seat.

When the handle is turned it raises or lowers a stem. At the base of the stem of a washer or seal opens or closes the water passage. They always have two controls, hot and cold. The washers are most often rubber washers and are more prone to leaks and dripping, but are fairly easy to fix.

Ball Valves

Ball valves are very common in kitchen sinks and were the first type of faucet washer. They are identifiable by their single handle that moves right round shaped cap above the base of the faucet spout.

The ball made of plastic or metal inside the faucet body and under the ball shaped cap has chambers or slots in it that control the flow and temperature of the mixture of water from the tap. The ball line slots with hot and cold water inlet seats in the faucet body to regulate the amount of water entering the mixing achieved beak.

Ball valves have no washer, require less maintenance and are inexpensive to replace, but because of the number of parts that make up this type of faucet, ball faucets tend to leak more than other valves washer or cartridge such as ceramic disk type.

Cartridge

Cartridge faucets operate with a movable stem cartridge that moves up and down to adjust the flow. They are identifiable by most of what they feel when they are based on their appearance. As opposed to a ball valve you push to turn a single cartridge faucet handle works up or down to adjust the volume of water and a left / right temperature.

Similarly, a two-handle faucet stem cartridge seems almost indistinguishable from a tap washer type compression. However, again, you can make a difference in how the handles feel when used.

A compression faucet requires you to squeeze (compress) the washer shut off the flow of water. With a cartridge faucet, the action is smooth and uniform. When the handle reaches the stop position, closing the tap without additional pressure is necessary as with a compression faucet.

Washer or cartridge faucets use a hollow plastic and insert the cartridge brass instead of a rubber disc, which does not wear nearly as quickly. The cartridge seals against the inside of the faucet body with O-rings. These faucets are more reliable and offer better value than the compression faucets.

Washerless cartridge faucet eliminates the leaks associated with washers. It also has one piece of assembly contained. Fewer parts means fewer things go wrong. Replacing the cartridge is easy … Just take down the old and new, without the hassle of many complex components.

Ceramic Disk

The valve is the highest quality. They are identifiable by their single lever on a large cylindrical body. These faucets have a wide range of cartridge housing two ceramic discs which slide over each other to control the flow of water and mix temperature.

Hardened ceramic is a durable material that is virtually indestructible and is guaranteed not to wear, but is obviously much more expensive than the tap or valve compression.
